Does the type of floor I place above underfloor heating matter?

We can confidently recommend our products for almost any finish, but some products may be more suited to certain floor types than others. You may also need to consider a maximum heat on your floor type. Find more details in our Floor Type Guide.

What are the typical underfloor heating running costs?

On average, a kilowatt of electricity (1000 watts) costs around 7p per hour at peak rate (consult your electricity provider for exact rates). Our Underfloor Heating Systems are rated between 150 and 200 watts per square metre. Based on the average rates:

  • 1m² of 150 watt costs approx. 1.05 pence per hour.
  • 1m² of 160 watt costs approx. 1.12 pence per hour.
  • 1m² of 200 watt costs approx. 1.40 pence per hour.
Will it help to have insulation below the heating mat?

Insulation is beneficial in any underfloor heating system and is particularly vital if you wish to use underfloor heating as your sole source of heating. Our thin 10mm insulation boards will increase the thermal efficiency of you system, maximising energy transfer to your floor and room to quickly reach the desired temperature. As a result, insulation boards reduce running costs as less energy is required to heat your room.

How long will it take before the floor is up to temperature?
On average the warm-up time is usually between 40 to 60 minutes. This is dependent on which system you are using, tile/floor type and thickness, and any insulation you have in place.
What size spur (electrical connection point) is needed?
In most cases a 13amp spur is sufficient. To calculate the exact loading in amps, use this simple calculation below:
  • (Total area of heating mat (m ) x Power rating of mat (W)) / Voltage of mat.
    e.g. 8m  of our 160w mat (230 Volts): (8 x 160) / 230 = 5.57 amps
Do I need a professional to install my system?
Our products have been designed with the customer in mind, with a comprehensive instruction manual to ensure an easy installation for any confident DIY-er or Trades Person. If you require help from a professional, contact us and we can arrange for a service.
What adhesives are needed?
It is essential that installers use a good quality adhesive with a flexible additive. If you are installing on a concrete sub-floor a latex compound is ideal. If installing on a wooden sub-floor then we would suggest a flexible tile adhesive as it is more suitable. Both types of sub-floor would benefit from being primed (particularly important on wooden sub-floors). It is also very important to ensure that the adhesives are allowed to cure naturally before the heating mats are turned on; this normally takes around two weeks.
Do I need a damage alarm?
The only time your system is at risk is the time between the installation of the underfloor heating and the final floor finish. To minimise this risk you may wish to buy an UFH Alarm that will alert you should anything damage your heating system whilst un-protected. If the alarm does sound during installation you will need to buy a simple repair kit. All electrical work should be carried out by a Part P qualified electrician.
